Dizziness & Balance Disorders

Dizziness, vertigo and balance disorders are an important theme within diving medicine. There are many general medical causes for derangements of function, but in diving medical contexts, the underlying pathology may also include inner ear decompression sickness, arterial gas embolism, and inner ear barotrauma. These are dealt with in great detail in other lectures on Pathophysiology of Decompression Illness and Dizziness & Vertigo in Divers.

This presentation offers a foundational overview of the sensory organs and integration systems responsible for maintaining balance and orientation and how they may be disrupted. It also offers a practical approach to diagnosing and managing dizziness and vertigo beyond the more familiar considerations of recompression or medication.
